This is a very traditional Scandinavian Ornament which opens into a little “basket” to hold little candies or gift cards. They can be hung on the tree or placed on a package to hold a gift card. The basic idea can be modified to make smaller or larger hearts, and are great for Valentine’s Day as well! Instructions: Cut two pieces of felt in contrasting colors (example: one in red and the other in grey), folding at the bottom following the pattern below. Keeping the pieces folded, lay one piece across the other piece with folded bottoms aligned. Use the width of the second piece to mark the depth of the vertical cuts. Switch colors on the bottom and repeat. Cut three slits in both pieces, making sure the strips are the same width. DO NOT cut the bottom loops. Now lay the red piece over the bottom of the grey. You will be weaving from left to right with the red piece, and right to left with the grey. Row one: Beginning near the top of the slits nearest the curved edges with pieces still folded, Weave the top left red loop through the far right grey loop and pull it to the top of the slits. Next weave the second grey loop through that same red loop. Weave that same red loop through the second from the left grey loop, and last of all, put the far left grey loop through the red loop. Smooth the stitches. Row two: With second red loop from the left, weave the far right grey loop through the red one, then the red through the left, and continue alternating back and forth weaving one colored loop through the next loop until you have finished the row. Row three: repeat row one. Row four: repeat row two. Note: the folded edges of the pieces should be lined up with the other colored pieces along the edges. When you finish weaving, adjust the stitches and edges so that weaving is smooth. Gently open the piece to check that you have a pocket. Hot glue the corners of the heart where the curve begins, and glue on a loop of felt for hanging. Your piece will look like this although this is not the actual size of the piece. Length is 5” to fold line for a total of 10” and width is 3 ½ inches. You can cut 3 pieces from a felt square. With a small strip to use for hanging loops. Two felt strips in alternate colors will make 3 woven hearts.
